You’ve probably heard terms like VP, ICVFX, AR, and XR thrown around constantly lately. But what do they actually mean? Because the industry is moving at lightning speed, these words get mixed up and misused as often as not.

The Production Spectrum: From Mattes to Virtual Subjects
Think of modern studio technology as a spectrum. Every step adds a new layer of capability, moving from basic video playback to real-time physical-to-digital synchronization.
1. The 2D LED Wall Elements (Basic In-Camera Effects)
- 2D LED Playback: The traditional set, location, or backdrop is replaced with a physical LED wall running pre-rendered video plates (such as driving plates with talent in a vehicle). There are no tracking sensors or 3D engines involved. However, because the LED wall acts as a massive emissive light source, it natively casts realistic, dynamic light onto your talent and creates flawless, organic reflections on vehicles, glass, and wardrobe.
- LED as a Set: For music videos, commercials, and other storytelling scenarios, sometimes photorealistic backgrounds are not the goal, and you can lean into the LED wall’s capabilities to create visually provocative or surreal imagery to make some great content. Patterns, sunsets, and anything else you can think of can create the shot you need the moment you imagine it.
2. The 3D LED Volume (Spatial Environments)
- 3D to 2D On Set: Unreal Engine is running on the playback machine, but rather than try to pump that image directly onto the LED wall, the creative team makes decisions on set based on shots they are lining up in the moment. Once locked in, a video of the plate can be rendered out and played back via software like DaVinci Resolve that can be color graded live to match the practical set. This workflow is a great bridge between the traditional playback pipeline and the new live rendered levels in VP.
- Live 3D with Camera Tracking: We take the LED wall and feed it a live, real-time 3D environment built in software like Unreal Engine, linked to tracking sensors on the cinema camera. When the camera moves, the 3D background shifts its perspective within the frustum in real time to match the lens position. The wall effectively acts as a physical window into a digital world, creating a perfect illusion of spatial depth and parallax right inside the viewfinder. In this tier, the digital world is utilized as reactive, photorealistic set design.
3. The Advanced Frontiers
- In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX): The total integration of live lens data with the virtual environment. The system reads your lens’s exact focal length, iris, and focus tracking. This allows filmmakers to treat digital assets not just as a background, but as the active subject of a shot. For example, a focus puller can rack focus from a physical actor in the foreground directly to a virtual character or digital element displayed on the LED wall, and the wall’s engine will blur the digital background in real time to match the true optical depth of field of the physical cinema glass.
- Alternating Frames (Multi-Frame Technology): High-end LED processors refresh their screens at speeds far beyond human perception. This allows a camera to capture a pristine 3D environment for realistic lighting and reflections on Frame A, while the wall instantly flashes a solid green matte on Frame B. The result is a single camera feed that provides final pixels live on set, while simultaneously delivering a perfect, automated keying matte for post-production adjustments.
Sorting the Alphabet Soup

- VP (Virtual Production): The massive, catch-all umbrella term. It refers to any workflow that merges physical filmmaking with digital tools—even digital storyboards or pre-visualization.
- ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects): A highly specific slice of the VP pie. It strictly means capturing final, finished visual effects live on set inside the camera viewfinder using tracked LED walls.
- AR (Augmented Reality): Overlaying digital objects in front of the real world—like a holographic graphic floating next to a presenter during a live corporate event.
- XR (Extended Reality): Typically used in the live event, concert, and corporate broadcast world. It combines an LED stage with “set extension,” where a live broadcast computer blends the physical edges of an LED screen into a massive digital environment for the viewers at home.
- Frustum: A dynamic window on the LED wall that tracks exactly where the cinema camera is looking. While the rest of the LED wall displays a lower-resolution image just to light the set, the inner frustum displays the ultra-high-resolution, perfectly perspective-shifted 3D world matching the camera’s exact field of view.
